Contact Information: Kathleen Cannon (drkatcannon@gmail.com)
Experience: Ready to move from ABD to doctor? I’m a fast (max. 7 business days), experienced (300+ dissertations), and competitively priced (1.5 cents per word) dissertation editor. Find out more here!
Services:
When to engage an editor– I usually work with candidates on editing their proposal (first three chapters with references) or their final dissertation (all five chapters).
APA 7- I edit using a combination of APA 7 and the candidate’s school’s guidelines. School guidelines. I always ask for the latest school guidelines before beginning editing. There is often a difference in margins, heading preferences, formatting of references, etc. between APA 7 and a school’s guidelines.
Styles- I also use styles for everything — heads, body, references, abstract, title page content… That way if there’s a change to, say, heading 2, it’s a single click instead of going back through the document. It also helps for consistency because everyone’s default Normal style is different and that can be a major mess, too.
Process– I use a combination of track changes and inserting comments. Track changes are things like grammar and APA; they need to accept these. I might insert comments if I don’t understand something or if I think they should move something. An example might be that a candidate mentioned a topic in chapter one and I expected to see that in the literature review but it wasn’t there. I’ll also suggest where things could be changed to add to the flow.
Cost Estimations: I usually charge about 1.5 cents per word. I will do an estimate once I see the work. I track my time and will invoice when I’m finished with editing. I never go over but sometimes go under the estimated amount. I ask for 7 business days from the agreed upon start date.

Experience: I have a PhD in English from Texas Christian University, and I have been a freelance editor since 2015.

I can also help with developmental editing earlier in the writing process and provide live consultations. Currently, I mostly work on academic projects (like dissertations and theses), but I also help with fiction and other non-fiction work.
Cost Estimations: For students, the current rate is $36 per hour, which on average is 7 to 8 pages, but it depends on the level of editing requested and the condition of the writing. I create an estimate before I get started, and then the final bill is based on actual hours worked (since it can sometimes be less than the original estimate).
